Kilning using biomass has CO2 and cost benefits

HLC have invested ethically and shrewdly into the finest facilities for our customer and our environment.  We have been looking into the benefits of HLC’s massive investments into kiln drying using biomass as a fuel, rather than that of oil and natural gas.

In short, we estimate that kiln drying using biomass as a fuel is saving between 1.988Kg of CO2 (gas) and 2.802Kg of CO2 (oil) PER PALLET. Therefore on an average load of 600 pallets this equates to a CO2 saving of around 1.6T per lorry load!

 

Below are our calculations:
For heating oil or kerosene, the CO2 emissions factor is 0.298 kgCO2/kWh based on Table 12 SAP 2012 version 9.92 (Oct 2013) used by building regulations.

 

1 litre kerosene = 10.35 kW
0.96 litres = 0.96 x 10.35 =9.936 kW to dry 1 pallet
Kerosene CO2 emissions = 9.936 kW x 0.298 =2.96 kg CO2 per pallet

 

Biomass wood chip CO2 = 0.016 kgCO2/kWh based on Table 12 SAP 2012 version 9.92 (Oct 2013) used by building regulations.
9.936 kW biomass = 2.84 kg wood chip required for 1 pallet
9.936 kW of wood chip = 9.936 x 0.016 = 0.158 kg CO2/pallet
Therefore the biomass wood chip saves 2.802 kg CO2 per pallet over oil

 
The natural gas CO2 emissions factor is 0.216 kgCO2/kWh based on Table 12 SAP 2012 version 9.92 (Oct 2013) used by building regulations.Assuming 0.96 litres of kerosene dries 1 pallet
0.96 x 10.35 =9.936 kW to dry 1 pallet
Therefore 9.936 kW of gas dries 1 pallet
Gas CO2 emissions = 9.936 kW x 0.216 =2.146 kg CO2 per palletBiomass wood chip CO2 = 0.016 kgCO2/kWh based on Table 12 SAP 2012 version 9.92 (Oct 2013) used by building regulations.

9.936 kW biomass = 2.84 kg wood chip required for 1 pallet
9.936 kW of wood chip = 9.936 x 0.016 = 0.158 kg CO2/pallet
Therefore the biomass wood chip saves 1.988 kg CO2 per pallet over natural gas
